Prior to studying dentistry, Lani worked as an efficiency and process improvement expert in a range of businesses around the world. However, after having children Lani decided she wanted a career where she could genuinely help other people which drove her to pursue a career in dentistry.

Lani has completed a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology), Bachelor of Business Management, MBA, PhD in business innovation and evidence-based improvement and is soon to complete her Bachelor of Dental Science. During this study she has received numerous accolades including a Pierre Fauchard Award, University Medal, Dean’s Honour Rolls, and an RACDS Orientation Scholarship. Due to her wide and varied background, Lani is regularly asked to speak at events including Innovation in Healthcare at the Business Capability Conference, Disruptive Dentistry ADAQ, and has won the People’s Choice Award at the QUT 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) event.

Despite her busy life, Lani also finds time to give back, devoting herself to such roles as the UQ BDSc Student Experience Committee Chair 2019, UQ HABS Interprofessional Education Committee Student Representative 2019, UQ BDSc Cohort Student Representative 2018-2019, UQ Student and Staff Partnerships P2P Networks 2019, and QUT PhD SEF Student Representative 2015-2018. It was this desire to give back and make a difference that has also driven Lani to found her own business, Thought Evolution Pty Ltd. Thought Evolution aims to create business savvy health professionals who can leverage behavioural economics and other tools to create positive change.

Here is what some of her classmates said about Lani.
“I think she is an inspiring figure, full of dedication and passion. She works hard to achieve her goals and improve the lives of others.”
“She is the most hard-working and unbelievably strong and ambitious individual I have ever come across. Juggling a PhD alongside a five year dental degree and topping the class while also taking care of two young children is an amazing feat!”
“Well-known in our school as SUPERWOMAN, how she manages to do it all is a mystery!”

Congratulations Dr Lani Guy on winning the 2019 Australian Dental Graduate Of The Year Award and the $1000 cash prize.
